Cuba

Cuba’s History

The history of Cuba over the past 500 years can easily be described as turbulent. Within those years Cuba has witness two bloody wars for independence, genocide, slavery, and, more recently, a populist revolution in the mid 20th Century. Seeing as this is a lighthearted travel blog for the most part, I am going to focus on how Cuba has changed in those periods, specifically Colonial and Post-Colonial Cuba, rather than the darker, more trepidatious periods.

Havana

Cuba’s most iconic city. Havana was my first destination on my five month travels, and a city I can say I hold very close to my heart. Its immense blend of rich culture, surprisingly delicious food and wonderful people makes it a place I struggled to leave, and one that I am desperate to return to.

Trinidad

Trinidad is a city of conflictions. It is a city that visually looks as if it is held firmly in the past, but is betrayed by every other aspect of its being. It is a city that caters heavily to tourists, and as such the restaurants are vastly more expensive than the rest of Cuba, and the city itself feels somewhat manufactured. Safe to say, it is still a wonderful city to visit, for its entrancing old town, the nearby white sand beaches, and the natural beauty that surround it.
